Bioeconomic Analysis of Aquaculture's Impact on Wild Stocks and Biodiversity AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
Anderson theorizes that development of the aquaculture of a species of fish (also captured in an open-access fishery) favours the conservation of its wild stocks, if competitive market conditions prevail. However, this theory is shown to be subject to significant limitations. While this is less so within his model, it is particularly so in an extended one outlined here. The extended model allows for the possibility that aquaculture development can impact negatively on wild stocks thereby shifting the supply curve of the capture fishery, or raise the demand for the fish species subject both to aquaculture and capture. Such development can threaten wild stocks and their biodiversity. While aquaculture development could in principle have no impact on the...

Biofilter efficiency of Eichhornia crassipes in wastewater treatment of fish farming in Amazonia: Eficiencia de Eichhornia crassipes como biofiltro en el tratamiento de aguas residuales de la piscicultura en el Amazonas Phyton
Rubim,MAL; Isolino Sampaio,PR; Parolin,P.
Fish is a very important part of the human diet in Amazonia. Near the growing cities, fish populations and individual size have decreased over the past decades. Alternatives to traditional and industrial fishing arise, including fish farming. Strategies to minimize the impact of fish farms on the environment are needed to have a regular and healthy fsh supply. This is to avoid a reduction of biodiversity, a depletion of natural resources, and/or the induction of significant changes in the structure and functioning of adjacent ecosystems. Very little research has been performed on management of efluents as to maintain the quality of water resources. The present study aimed at testing the efficiency of the Amazonian aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia crassipes as...

Economic and Environmental Impacts of Improving Growth Rate and Feed Efficiency in Fish Farming Depend on Nitrogen and Density Limitation ArchiMer
Besson, Mathieu; Komen, H; Vandeputte, Marc; Aubin, Joel; De Boer, I J M; Van Arendonk, J A M.
The aim of fish breeding is to increase profit by producing faster growing fish with lower feed intake. However, little is known about the economic and environmental impacts of selective breeding programs for fish. We modelled a fish farm producing African catfish in a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) to calculate economic values of growth rate and feed efficiency with production limited by fish density in rearing tanks and fish nitrogen emission. We also calculated “environmental values” with Life Cycle Assessment. The economic and environmental values of growth rate and feed efficiency depended on the limiting factor. When nitrogen was the limiting factor, economic and environmental values of growth rate were zero. But, on the other hand, feed...

Dias, Danielle de Carla; Furlaneto, Fernanda de Paiva Badiz; Sussel, Fábio Rosa; Tachibana, Leonardo; Gonçalves, Giovani Sampaio; Ishikawa, Carlos Massatoshi; Natori, Mariene Miyoko; Ranzani-Paiva, Maria José Tavares.
This work examines the economic advantages of probiotic use in the diet of Nile tilapia broodstock during the reproductive period. For this purpose, Bacillus subtilis was applied as a feed additive. The experimental design was completely randomized with three treatment groups: the T0 control (without probiotic), the T1 continuous probiotic intake, and the T2 alternate probiotic intake at a dose of 0.50 g kg-1 of feed (1010 CFU g-1) with four replicates. For the reproduction assay, 118 females and 48 males of Nile tilapia (proportion 4 males:9 females. hapa-1) (weight 527.65 g ± 185.98 g and length 30.16 cm ± 3.57 cm) were distributed into 12 hapas (3.5 × 2.0 × 1.5 m). Reproductive variables (spawning female percentage, egg production, and fry production)...

Economic values of growth and feed efficiency for fish farming in recirculating aquaculture system with density and nitrogen output limitations: a case study with African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) ArchiMer
Besson, M.; Komen, H.; Aubin, J.; De Boer, I. J. M.; Poelman, M.; Quillet, Edwige; Vancoillie, C.; Vandeputte, Marc; Van Arendonk, J A M.
In fish farming, economic values (EV) of breeding goal traits are lacking, even though they are key parameters when defining selection objectives. The aim of this study was to develop a bioeconomic model to estimate EV of 2 traits representing production performances in fish farming: the thermal growth coefficient (TGC) and the feed conversion ratio (FCR). This approach was applied to a farm producing African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). In the RAS, 2 factors could limit production level: the nitrogen treatment capacity of the biofilter or the fish density in rearing tanks at harvest. Profit calculation includes revenue from fish sales, cost of juveniles, cost of feed, cost of waste water treatment, and fixed...

Economic viability of the piauçu Leporinus macrocephalus (Garavello & Britski, 1988) production Scientia Agricola
Takahashi,Leonardo Susumu; Gonçalves,Flavio Daolio; Abreu,Janessa Sampaio de; Martins,Maria Inez Espagnoli Geraldo; Ferreira,Antonio Carlos Manduca.
Brazilian fish farms presented an accelerated development during the early 90's, mainly because of the increase in fee-fishing operations. To meet the demand of this market, fish production and supply became excessive and, as a consequence, the number of fee-fishing operations, farmers and the final selling price, decreased. This study analyzes the technical aspects, production cost, profitability and economic viability of the production of piauçu (L. macrocephalus) in ponds, based on information from a rural property. Feeding and fingerling costs amount to approximately 47.1% of the total production cost, representing together with the final selling price the most important factor affecting profitability. The payback period was 8.3 years, the liquid...

Effects on phytoplankton growth of dissolved substances produced by fish farming ArchiMer
Arzul, Genevieve; Clement, Alejandro; Pinier, Anne.
Fish Farming enriches the water column in dissolved organic and inorganic material. These materials excreed by the fish, elutriate from uneaten food and derive from other polluting substances. Ratios of the organic/inorganic forms of substances (for example N and P) are thus modified. Such perturbations in turn affect phytoplankton development. From in vitro analyses and tests of water taken from a turbot rearing tank, we show the changes in seawater chemical composition produced as well as the way growth was modified in three phytoplankton species: the diatom, Chaetoceros gracile, and the dinoflagellates, Gymnodinium cf. nagasakiense and Alexandrium minutum. Elutriates from the granules used for feed (0.1 to 100 mg.l(-1)) were found to be stimulating,...

Escapes of non-native fish from flooded aquaculture facilities: the case of Paranapanema River, southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Casimiro,Armando César Rodrigues; Garcia,Diego Azevedo Zoccal; Vidotto-Magnoni,Ana Paula; Britton,John Robert; Agostinho,Ângelo Antônio; Almeida,Fernanda Simões de; Orsi,Mário Luís.
ABSTRACT Non-native species are a major driver of biodiversity loss. Aquaculture activities play a key role in introductions, including the escape of fishes from fish farm facilities. Here, the impact of flooding due to El Niño rains in 2015/2016 in the Lower and Middle Paranapanema River basin, southern Brazil, was investigated by evaluating fish escapes from 12 fish farms. The flooding resulted in the escape of approximately 1.14 million fishes into the river, encompassing 21 species and three hybrids. Non-native species were the most abundant escapees, especially Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Coptodon rendalli (Boulenger, 1897) (96% of all fish). Only seven native fishes were in the escapee fauna, comprising 1% of all fish. Large floods,...

Eugenol as an anesthetic for juvenile common snook PAB
Bernardes Júnior,Jurandir Joaquim; Nakagome,Fernando Kojima; Mello,Giovanni Lemos de; Garcia,Silvano; Amaral Júnior,Hilton.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of eugenol as an anesthetic for juvenile common snook, and to determine the minimum effective concentration for use in handling procedures. In the first trial, juvenile common snook were subjected to immersion baths at 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, and 150 mg L-1 eugenol concentrations, after which induction and recovery times were evaluated. In the second experiment, the lethal exposure time (LT50) at 75 mg L-1 was estimated. Minimum effective eugenol concentration was 50 mg L-1, andthe stage of deep anesthesia and recovery were, respectively, reached at 126.3 and 208.8 s. At 75 mg L-1, LT50 was 1,314 s, and induction time and recovery were also satisfactory; however, fish cannot tolerate over 229 s exposure.

Food deprivation does not affect growth performance of juvenile tambacu Acta Amazonica
PAZ,Arlan de Lima; PASTRANA,Yugo Moraes; BRANDÃO,Lian Valente.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of food deprivation on the growth performance of the commercially important hybrid fish tambacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus male × Colossoma macropomum female). For this, 171 juveniles of average length 8 cm and 11.4 g body mass were distributed in nine tanks, and allocated to three treatments: the fish were fed every day (control), fed for six days followed by one day of food deprivation (6F/1D) and fed for five days followed by two days of food deprivation (5F/2D). After 77 days, all animals achieved similar growth rates. Only animals submitted to two days of food deprivation presented hyperphagia. There was a reduction in total feed consumption of 3.8% and 10.8% for the 6F/1D and 5F/2D...

Influence of water temperature on the economic value of growth rate in fish farming: The case of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) cage farming in the Mediterranean ArchiMer
Besson, M.; Vandeputte, Marc; Van Arendonk, J. A. M.; Aubin, J.; De Boer, I. J. M.; Quillet, E.; Komen, H..
In sea cage farming, fish are exposed to seasonal variations of water temperature, and these variations can differ from one location to another. A small increase in water temperature does not only stimulate growth of the fish (until an optimal level) but also lowers dissolved oxygen concentration in water. Dissolved oxygen may then become a rearing constraint during the production cycle if the oxygen requirement of fish is higher than the supply. The impact of this constraint on production parameters (stocking density of cages and/or batch rotation) and thus on economic profit of a farm will depend on both local thermal regime and growth potential of the fish. Increased growth is one of the most important traits in a breeding objective to increase...

ABSTRACT This study evaluated morphometric and ultrasound information of tilapia (O. niloticus) breeders through multivariate analysis. We applied correlation, clustering, and principal component analysis to a dataset composed of information from 222 male and female breeders of the improved GIFT strain. The body weight, objective of the breeding program, showed a high positive correlation with most of the morphometric parameters. The formation of clusters indicated characteristics responsible for muscle composition and carcass weight. Some characteristics showed a high correlation, such as body weight and fillet weight (0.98 and 0.94 for females and males, respectively), and a high contribution to the explanation of data variability; of the total...

Parasites in farmed Piaractus brachypomus (Serrasalmidae) in the state of Acre, western Brazilian Amazonia Acta Amazonica
NEGREIROS,Luciano Pereira; TAVARES-DIAS,Marcos.
ABSTRACT This study investigated the parasite fauna in Piaractus brachypomus grown in fish farms in the state of Acre, in the western Brazilian Amazon. We examined 160 fish from four farms. Overall parasite prevalence was 66.9%. The fish were parasitized by Anacanthorus spathulatus, Mymarothecium viatorum, Anacanthorus penilabiatus, Clinostomum marginatum, Echinorhynchus jucundus and Henneguya sp., but monogenean species were the dominant parasites. Monogeneans showed an aggregated distribution pattern and there was a weak correlation between host size and abundance of M. viatorum and A. penilabiatus. No difference in the condition factor of parasitized and non-parasitized fish was detected. The fish of all farms had the gills parasitized by A. spathulatus...
